How Far We’ve Come

Though BQDC trades primarily in reviews and commentary these days, this site was originally meant to house fiction. My intent was to write short fiction pieces on a weekly basis and post them here. Obviously that never happened. The demands of such prolific fiction production proved to be too much and instead BQDC slowly evolved into what it is now: a place for me to discuss books, music, and miscellany.

The truth is that I haven’t written a single short fiction piece in almost a year. I haven’t given up on fiction though – far from it, actually. Aside from slaying the NaNo dragon, I put a good amount of work into the drafts of two other novels this year. None of these three projects is anywhere near a completed state, but – despite my seeming inability to prioritize one over the others – they are moving along, incremental step by incremental step.

And I’m pleased with what this site has become. Since I buckled down at the end of June, I’ve been exceedingly productive here and the effort has certainly taught me a lot about the discipline of writing. I don’t know how this site will look in a year or if I’ll even still be operating it and, frankly, I’m not sure that it matters. I wrote about friends and family and floods this year and grew all along the way. It seems a long time ago that I was making another beginning.

So here we are. The year is ending and it’s time for a bit of vacation. I’ll be back at some point after the new year, that much seems certain. In the meantime, I’ll leave you with what I originally meant for this site to contain: short fiction. Tomorrow I’ll be posting ‘The Last Road,’ a short form homage to my favorite post-apocalyptic works. It’s hardly seasonal but it seems somehow fitting for my last post of the year.

So happy holidays, everyone. It’s been a great year. I’ll see you on the other side.
